AEO vs SEO: What’s Different and What Isn’t

The short answer

SEO gets your page into Google’s list of links. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your business named inside the answer itself: Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity. They aren’t two separate jobs. Google says its AI features run on the same basics as regular search. What changes is how you write the page, and how often other sites mention you.

Three things to know

  • You don’t need a second, “AI version” of your site.
  • Answer the question in the first few lines, then prove it.
  • Mentions of your business on other sites matter more for AI answers than links do.

The difference in one table

SEO AEO
The goal Rank high in the list of links Get named or quoted in the answer
Where you show up Google and Bing results AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity
What helps most Useful pages, links from other sites, a fast site The same, plus answer-first writing and brand mentions
How you measure Rankings and clicks in Search Console How often you’re named across a fixed set of questions
Separate pages? No. One page can do both jobs.

Most of the work sits in the middle. That’s why one page can do both jobs.

Why it matters now

Fewer people click. When Google shows an AI summary, searchers click a regular result far less often. So the answer itself has become shelf space worth fighting for.

What AI answers pick up

A 2024 study built a test engine and changed pages one way at a time. Adding real statistics and quotes raised how visible a page was in the answers, by up to 41% for the best methods. Stuffing in keywords didn’t help.

Off your site, mentions count. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, mentions of a brand across the web lined up with AI Overview visibility far more closely (0.664) than backlinks did (0.218). So press, podcasts, reviews and helpful Reddit answers all feed the machine.

Do you need separate AEO pages?

Usually, no. Google’s own guide is plain about it: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews.” Build a separate page only when people search for a separate thing. For example, someone hiring an “AEO agency” needs a service page. Someone asking “what is AEO” needs a guide. Neither needs an AI-only copy of the other.

Two related guides go deeper on the page-level work: structured data and schema for AEO, and semantic HTML for AI.

How to measure it

Pick 20 to 50 questions your buyers really ask. Once a month, ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. Note whether your business is named, and which page gets cited. Answers move around a lot from month to month, so read the trend over a quarter, not one check. Keep watching Search Console clicks, too. Rankings still feed the answers.

Questions people ask

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Google says the same SEO basics apply to its AI Overviews and AI Mode. AEO adds work on top: answer-first writing and getting your brand mentioned on other sites.

Do I need separate pages for AI search?

Usually not. One well-built page can rank in the links and be quoted in the answer. Build separate pages only when people search for a separate thing.

How do I know if AI tools mention my business?

Pick 20 to 50 questions your buyers ask. Ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google each month, and log whether you’re named. Track the trend over at least 30 days.

How long does AEO take?

Page changes can show up within weeks. Brand mentions on other sites build over months. AI answers also shift a lot month to month, so judge the trend, not one check.
