What Makes a Biotech Website Actually Work

A biotech website carries an unusual dual burden: it has to communicate credibly to PhD-level scientists and investors in the same breath that it reassures patients or partners who may have no scientific background at all. Get that balance wrong — too dense, too vague, or too generic — and you lose both audiences before they scroll past the hero.

What follows draws directly from that work: the structural choices, the content decisions, and the design patterns that hold up under scrutiny from each of a biotech company’s very different audiences.

A Cure — a-cure.org

A Cure is a patient-advocacy and research organisation working on a rare disease. The central design challenge here is shared by most non-profit biotech sites: the visitor arriving from a research context and the family member arriving from a Google search about a diagnosis are reading the same page. We structured the site so the mission statement and patient resources surface immediately, while the scientific and clinical-trial detail lives one deliberate click deeper — accessible but not front-and-centre for someone who isn’t ready for it yet. Navigation labels were written in plain language, not in acronyms.

Amphivena — South San Francisco, CA

Amphivena was a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on bispecific antibody therapies. Biotech companies at this stage have a specific credibility problem: they need to project serious scientific rigour to attract institutional partners and investors, but they often don’t yet have the product-launch narrative that fills a commercial site. We solved this by anchoring the site around the platform and mechanism of action — giving visitors something concrete and scientifically substantive to engage with — rather than leading with pipeline graphics that convey little at an early stage.

Animate Biosciences — animate.bio

Animate Biosciences works in the RNA therapeutics space — a field where the underlying science is genuinely novel and where the site has to do real explanatory work without becoming a whitepaper. The site uses motion and illustration to walk visitors through the delivery mechanism in a way that is accurate but not opaque. The visual language was deliberately chosen to feel grounded and precise rather than the vague “molecule floating in blue light” aesthetic that dominates the category.

Anresco Laboratories — anresco.com

Anresco is an accredited analytical testing laboratory in San Francisco. Their visitors arrive with a specific, task-oriented need: they want to know whether Anresco can test their product, how to submit a sample, and what accreditations the lab holds. The site is organised around those questions rather than around Anresco’s internal service categories. Accreditation documentation and turnaround information are surfaced prominently because those are the actual decision criteria for a prospective client. Laboratory sites often bury this behind “About Us” pages; putting it front-and-centre reduced friction for exactly the visitors most likely to convert.

Balto Pharmaceuticals — baltopharma.com

Balto is a South Pasadena-based pharmaceutical company. The site needed to function simultaneously as a scientific credibility statement and as a lean, professional presence appropriate for early-stage partnership conversations. We kept the page count focused — a common mistake on biopharma sites is building out sections for content that doesn’t exist yet, resulting in placeholder-heavy pages that undermine rather than build confidence. A tighter, more finished site reads as more mature at this stage than a sprawling one with thin content.

What We’ve Learned Across These Projects

Building across these five organisations — a rare-disease non-profit, a clinical-stage antibody company, an RNA therapeutics startup, an accredited contract laboratory, and an early-stage pharma — surfaces patterns that don’t show up in generic “best biotech websites” listicles.

Audience segmentation has to happen in the navigation, not just the copy

Most biotech companies have three or four distinct visitor types: potential investors or partners, scientists evaluating the platform or technology, patients or caregivers, and prospective hires. Writing the copy to speak to all of them at once produces copy that resonates with none of them. The more effective approach is to make the navigation itself do the segmentation — so each audience type arrives quickly at content calibrated to their actual question.

The pipeline page is almost always the weakest page on the site

Pipeline graphics — the horizontal stage-of-development table that almost every clinical-stage biotech uses — are among the most visited pages on a biotech site and among the least informative. They typically show a drug name, an indication, and a coloured bar. For an investor or partner who wants to evaluate the programme, that communicates almost nothing. The sites that hold visitors’ attention on this page are the ones that attach a brief, plain-language description of the mechanism and the unmet need to each programme, not just the Phase I/II/III indicator.

Credibility is carried by specificity, not by design alone

A clean, modern design is table stakes in this sector — every agency can produce one. What actually distinguishes a high-performing biotech site from a generic one is whether the content is specific enough to be credible. Named scientific advisors with real affiliations, actual peer-reviewed publication references, specific assay capabilities or manufacturing parameters — these are the details that make a site feel like it was written by people who know what they’re doing. FDA guidance on clinical trial transparency is one example of primary-source material that a biotech site can link to in context, rather than paraphrasing in a way that adds nothing a visitor couldn’t find themselves.

Mobile performance is not optional, even for B2B biotech

The assumption that biotech decision-makers only visit sites on desktop is wrong. Conference settings, referrals shared by text message, and investor due diligence done on a phone between meetings all mean that a biotech site with poor mobile performance is losing real visitors. Every site we build is tested on actual devices — not just browser emulation — specifically because rendering behaviour on a five-year-old Android differs in ways that matter.

The “About” page does more work than most biotech companies realise

For a pre-revenue or early-stage company, the About page is often the site’s primary credibility document. A visitor who is unsure whether to engage — whether as a potential partner, an investor, or a hire — will go directly there. A generic founder biography and a mission statement that could apply to any life-sciences company wastes that opportunity. Named founders with their prior affiliations, the specific scientific insight that motivated the company’s founding, and a candid account of where the company is in its development are all more useful than vague language about “transforming medicine.”

A Note on the “Best Biotech Websites” Genre

Lists of the best biotech website designs are everywhere. They typically feature ten to twenty sites selected for visual impact and annotated with observations like “clean typography” and “compelling hero image.” Those observations aren’t wrong, but they’re not particularly actionable if you’re building or rebuilding a biotech site.

The sites that consistently perform well — that hold visitors, generate partnership enquiries, attract talent, and support fundraising conversations — do so because of structural and content decisions that aren’t visible in a screenshot. How the navigation is organised for multiple audience types. Whether the science is explained specifically enough to be credible. Whether the team page gives visitors enough to trust the people behind the platform. Whether the site loads quickly on the devices your actual visitors use.

Design matters, and good design in this sector requires genuine understanding of the conventions and expectations. But design is in service of those structural choices, not a substitute for them.
