Website Redesign – Our Step by Step Process

website redesign - step by step process

Do you hate your existing website? Can you not stand to look at it for another minute? If you’re thinking of getting a redesign for your website, you’re in the right place.About 80-90% of our business is doing some website redesign.

Website Redesign

Maybe you just got hired to your company, perhaps in marketing, and you can clearly see how your company’s old, ugly website is holding you back.

In this article, we’ll go over the major challenges you may have with your current site.

We’ll also talk about how your problems may be even worse than you think and the hidden dangers your existing website could contain.

Furthermore, we share our proven step-by-step process guaranteed to make your website redesign fun and easy.

Okay, so let’s get going…

Challenges

Raise your hand if you’re having one or more of the following issues with your site:

Ugly

Your website just doesn’t look good. The colors are off, the fonts don’t look good, and overall the site just has an amateurish and unprofessional look to it. Your competitor’s sites look so much more clean and professional looking.

Dated

You can’t put your finger on it, but your site just looks ‘old’ and not modern or up to date. The width of the site, the layout, the alignment all look like a website that was designed almost ten years ago.

Can’t Run Updates

One thing that drives you crazy is that your site is impossible to update. The backend is literally under lock and key, and you have to pay the previous design firm a fortune just to make simple edits.

It could be that you do have access to the backend of the site but you need to o through a quick boot camp just to make simple text edits.

Looks Terrible on Mobile

You hate how your site looks on mobile. It’s difficult to read and impossible to navigate. The text is hard to read and the flash animation doesn’t show up at all, which makes the site look broken.

Your Website Doesn’t Show Up on Google

You’re pulling her hair out in frustration because the site is nowhere to be found on Google. All of your competitors are showing up at the top of Google’s search results, and your site is completely missing.

It’s Worse Than You Think

Not only could you be getting more traffic, conversions, and business with a website redesign, your current site is putting you at risk:

Google Penalty

Google is now penalizing websites that aren’t optimized for mobile. Your non-mobile website is costing you precious visitors, which ends up costing you money.

Security Dangers

Older websites that are not well maintained have a greater risk of being hacked or infected with malware which causes costly, time-consuming repairs.

Lost Business

You may be better off having no website at all than a website that represents your company in a poor light. This is because having an ugly website sends the wrong message to potential customers. As the great motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said: “People come up to me all the time and say people shouldn’t judge you by the way you look. Well, let me give you a clue. They do!”

Our Website Redesign Process

As I mentioned before about 80-90% of our business are website redesigns. Over the years we have perfected a process to maximize the results of redesign work. Here is the process:

Discovery

The first step we take is to learn more about your business goals for the site. This includes learning more about your vision for the new site and how you will measure your website redesign a success.

We work with you to establish who the major user types are for the site, what they are looking for and what are the next steps they want to take.

You would then share with us other websites you like the look and feel of. We would get a sense of which fonts, colors and other design elements you like. If you have an existing branding or style guide, we will work within those guidelines. If we would put together a branding and style guide for you.

We then create for you a preliminary mockup of the homepage of the website redesign. This all happens during our Free Mockup phase, and you would pay and sign nothing during this phase. It is only after receiving the mockup that you would make a decision to move forward working together.

Design

During the design phase, we work together, going back and forth with edits, using Photoshop mockups to settle on the design for the site.

We like to work on the homepage design first and get that agreed upon before moving forward with the inner pages.

Once the homepage mockup has been set the total site design is halfway there.

Next, we mockup the unique inner pages of the site and go back and forth with design edits until those pages are complete.

At this point, the design phase has been finalized.

Content

While working on the design phase of the project, we would be working together with you to organize and structure your website content.

The content phase takes place in two parts:

Sitemap

The sitemap is the main skeleton of your website. It represents all the pages found on the site and their relationship to each other. We will work with you, often using data we find while analyzing your Google Analytics reports, to identify the major pages of the site and to make sure those pages are easily identifiable within the new sitemap hierarchy.

Website Content

Once the sitemap is established, we set up folders within Google Drive. There, we pull all content from your existing website and set them up as Google Documents. This allows you to update easily and edit the content and provide a central repository for all content for the website.

Development

After the design and content phases are complete, we move forward to developing the site. It is during the development phase that we also develop the mobile responsive design. Once the development is completed, we do a thorough Q.A. (quality assurance) test of the site making sure that it displays properly across all browsers and mobile devices. We then send you a test link of the website for review. After the site meets with your final approval, it is launched for the whole world to see.

Conclusion

As you see, there are a lot of moving parts when it comes to a website redesign. To make it even easier, we put together a website redesign checklist to help you determine the areas where you need an update.

The key is to follow a proven process. Otherwise, you run the risk of winding up in website redesign purgatory. When the design, content, and development happen piecemeal, then the overall process takes 2 to 3 times longer than it should. And the final result not nearly as good as it could have been.
